GRANDOIL Offshore MPD Services Summary

GRANDOIL successfully expanded MPD services from onshore drilling to China offshore oil and gas sector in 2019. Since then, the company has achieved a steady growth in offshore MPD operations. It marks a significant milestone for GRANDOIL’s MPD development strategy and further consolidates its leading position in China’s MPD market. This achievement showcases the industrial recognition of GRANDOIL’s capabilities and technical expertise in the MPD project management and execution. It also enables the company to continuously optimize MPD equipment and refine operational procedures and manuals.

As depicted by the following MPD activity chart, an exponential increase in MPD drilling services was supported by the increasing offshore MPD jobs. Starting in 2019, GRANDOIL steadily gained increasing application in offshore MPD operations which were mainly driven by considerable reduction of drilling cost and minimum well control risks.

Among the more than 400 wells drilled so far by GRANDOIL MPD operation teams, a total of 84 wells are deep wells with a total depth exceeding 3000 meters (9842.5 feet). Furthermore, 31 wells had a total depth greater than 6000 meters (19685.0 feet) with the deepest one reaching 9028 meters (29619 feet). Of these wells, a total of 151 wells were located offshore and over 250 wells onshore. Among all MPD wells,  99 were horizontal wells including 80 gas producers, 135 were deviated wells with 73 gas producers and 58 oil producers inclusively. Additionally, GRANDOIL has employed MPD technology to drill other type of wells, including extended reach wells, vertical wells, and re-entry wells. Among the 400+ wells, 122 were exploration or wildcat wells, 60 were evaluation wells, and the remaining were development wells. The hole sections drilled range in size from 5-7/8” to 17-1/2”, and by the end of 2025, the accumulative footage serviced by GRANDOIL MPD operations has reached 418,000 meters.

Over the past 12 years, GRANDOIL has accumulated extensive and diversified experience in managed pressure drilling services. Ten offshore wells had been drilled through managed pressure drilling operations with semi-submersible rig, while more than 140 wells had been completed through offshore platforms or jack-up rigs. The marine environment presents significant technical challenges to MPD operations. These challenges include limited spaces for equipment arrangement, strict environmental regulations and high sensitivity to mud spills - particularly when oil-based mud is used- and an extremely narrow window of drilling fluid density less than 0.05 g/cm³. Additional complexities involve well losses when a rig pump is operating, coupled with well influx immediately upon pump shutdown. Drawing on insights and best practices from onshore MPD operations, GRANDOIL’s MPD teams had successfully and effectively addressed all these challenges. Through the offshore MPD operations, the company has developed a comprehensive managed pressure drilling strategy and further strengthens its in-depth expertise in MPD operations across diverse harsh environments and complex conditions, including drilling, connections, pipe stripping, and circulation for mud conditioning and influx removal.

Backed by extensive and diversified experience in managed pressure drilling operations and supported by customized tools and fit-for-purpose equipment, GRANDOIL possesses comprehensive engineering capabilities, specialized tools, and proven expertise to address any challenges encountered during MPD operations. The company remains committed to its core principle: creating value for clients while upholding uncompromised safety standards.
