Managed Pressure Drilling System

EKM® MPD History

GRANDOIL started reaserching, developping and manufacturing the first generation of EKM® MPD drilling system in 2013, and successfully applied MPD drilling operations on wells in Tarim Basin for CNPC in April 2014. Over years, we have been dedicated to improving the control system, and have upgraded the equipment from generation 1 to generation 7 and provided MPD drilling services from onshore to offshore for CNPC, Sinopec and CNOOC in China.

GRANDOIL has owned 32 full packages of EKM® MPD drilling systems and delivered MPD drilling services for more than 400 wells since 2014. Over the years, the company has developed comprehensive EKM® MPD drilling engineering standards, operational guidelines and requirements.

1.  All EKM® MPD Drilling Crew Qualification Requirements

 First Aid

IWCF or IADC

 EKM® MPD drilling experience

 H2
 SCBA (
self-contained breathing apparatus)

2. Contingency Plans

 Plugged EKM® MPD drilling chokes
 Serious RCD failure
 Drill string failure (Washout/Twist off)
 None return valve failure
 PWD tool failure
 Well control matrix

EKM® MPD drilling chokes washed out
 Plugged drill string
 Rig mechanical or power failure
 Dog house contingency plan
 Plugged coriolis flow meter

3. EKM® MPD Drilling Operation Procedures

 Load/Unload Equipment Procedures
Pressure Test EKM® MPD Equipment Procedure
 Tripping in/out Procedures
EKM® MPD drilling equipment flushing procedure

Rig up/down EKM® MPD Equipment Procedures
 Connection Procedure
RCD Bearing Assembly Change Out Procedure

4. Onsite EKM® MPD Drilling Orientation

For the rig crew and thirty parties on location, detail:

EKM® MPD drilling operation procedures and contingency plans
 Hazardous areas and evacuation routes

 Radio communication protocol
 Safety practical drills

No EKM® MPD drilling operations until all crews are clear with all MPD procedures.

5. Risk Analysis during EKM® MPD drilling

 Poor communication
 Insufficient training
 Kick due to underbalanced BHP
 Failure to follow procedures

Release of trapped gas and/or hot mud
Losses due to induced formation fracture from overpressure
 Trapped pressure in lines

Poor communication with MPD crew when performing operations on mud tanks and manipulation of valves on rig choke manifold, standpipe and BOP
